The '65 appearance at the Folk Festival was a turning point in his career, a distancing of himself from his acoustic folk music to his more blues-based electric music. Despite wide speculation that Dylan would once again attempt to shock the audience at Newport, Dylan performed a straightforward set, with few surprises aside from his adoption of a wig and fake beard. The performance was reviewed favorably and provided a much-needed econ. Matched only by the Beatles and Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan continues to captivate music and pop culture fans with a seemingly never-ending stream of new and old recordings, books, documentaries, feature films, and more. The Other Side of the Mirror - Live at Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965 is a worthy addition to the canon whether this 83-minute compilation will serve to illuminate the Dylan myth or merely perpetuate it is open to question, but without a doubt there's plenty of fascinating material here. On this day in 1965, Bob Dylan went electric at the Newport Folk Festival, performing a rock-and-roll set publicly for the very first time while a chorus of shouts and boos rained down on him from a dismayed audience. Six weeks earlier, Bob Dylan had recorded the single that marked his move out of acoustic folk and into the idiom of electrified rock and roll. Like A Rolling Stone had only been released five days before his appearance at Newport, however, so most in the audience had no idea what lay in store for them. You know him, he's yours: Bob Dylan. It's hard to imagine a more ironic introduction, but those were the words used by Ronnie Gilbert of The Weavers to introduce Dylan at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. What a crazy thing to say Dylan wrote in his memoir, Chronicles. Screw that. As far as I knew, I didn't belong to anybody then or now. A year later at Newport he made his point loud and clear.
